Thoughts about class on 1/21/15 Borders.

So last weeks class we discussed all the different borders around the world. I never thought of some of the places we spoke about as being cultural or ethnic borders such as gang turf. When we talked about it in class it made me think about where i grew up in New Jersey. We had areas that were mostly white middle class, blue collar. We also areas that were all black and varied from middle to low income. One place was Red Bank, a town next to ours that had a neighborhood called Shrewsbury which was  low income and very dangerous. The gangs their marked the phone poles with a black X to tell whites to stay out. The police would not go in these areas and people passing through were told not to stop at red lights. This was in the 1970's and this area was hit hard by the race riots of the late 1960's. I realized that this area would be considered functional operating in a formal area. It was cool to see a personal reference to what I just learned. This is an example of cultural and ethnic groups forming their own borders.
